Top Russian and US officials will meet in Riyadh on Tuesday to discuss improving ties, a “possible” truce in Ukraine and a summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
As per Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and a senior Putin aide Yury Ushakov will fly to Riyadh on Monday. The talks between the US and Russian counterparts will be “devoted primarily to restoring the whole complex of Russian-American relations,” Peskov told to Russian Media.
Moscow has expressed its desire to discuss a wide range of security issues beyond just a potential ceasefire in Ukraine. The Russian government has consistently criticized NATO’s military presence in Central and Eastern Europe, calling for the withdrawal of troops from several Eastern European nations. This demand was made prior to the launch of Russia’s full-scale military offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.
Talks in Riyadh will also “be dedicated to possible negotiations on a Ukrainian resolution, and organising a meeting between the two presidents,” Peskov told reporters.
Volodymyr Zelensky In Saudi Arabia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to his spokesperson. The visit will occur one day after scheduled meetings between Russian and U.S. officials. Spokesman Sergei Nyakiforov confirmed that Zelensky, accompanied by his wife, will be in Saudi Arabia as part of a “long-planned” official trip. Although Zelensky announced the visit last week, he did not specify a date and stated that he had no plans to meet with Russian or U.S. officials during the trip.
Donald Trump And Vladimir Putin
There is growing speculation that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump may meet in Riyadh. It remains unclear whether the two leaders will hold trilateral talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky in attendance. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce has confirmed that a summit on Ukraine will take place between Trump and Putin in Saudi Arabia.
